reported by Charith Madurapperuma Don
On the 31st July 2014 Sri Lanka's Chamara Perera faced off with Scotland's Alex Gludkov
at the SECC Scottish Exhibition conference center for the 3rd place slot in the under 65kg category. Both Perera and Gludkov beat New Zealand's Craig Miller and Scotland's Gareth Jones, respectively, to arrive at the this clash for the Bronze medal.
The two bouts were of most exciting nature as both fighters eagerly pitted their wits against
each other, picking a plentiful of points along the way, much to the crowd's viewing pleasure.
The game drew to an exciting end at 16 points to Perera and 22 points to Gludkov. Perera had the chance to gain 6 points to stay in the battle, but to his excellent efforts, the timer went off ending the game and handing victory to the Gludkov.
This was not of a great loss but a cause for celebration as it was an honor for the Sri Lankan to put up such a fight, especially as Gludkov was Ukrainian born and had worked hard training with some of the most renowned Ukrainian wrestling coaches.
Despite not attaining a medal at this year's commonwealth games, the Sri Lankan's would feel very proud and privileged to know that Cat 1. FILA referee & coach Rumesh Anuradha Silva was the appointed referee & judge for Wrestling. He was 1 of 7 judges at this year's games, picked out from a vast 17 nations.
To conclude, a great thanks must be awarded to the Sri Lankan wrestling enthusiast's and former national champions that traveled many miles in order to support the Sri Lankan athletes, boosting their morale's throughout the whole tournament.
